Student Transportation
Basic Policy
The superintendent shall supervise the implementation of procedures and arrangements required to provide Board of Education authorized student transportation.
Determination of Bus Stop Locations
Bus stop locations shall be determined as follows:
- Distance from School Site
Elementary and middle school bus stops shall be located at least one mile from the school. High school bus stops shall be located at least one and one-half miles from the school. Measurement at the school site shall start at the intersection of the center line drawn from the public street nearest the school building and the center line drawn from the school house door nearest the bus stop. Each successive stop location on any given bus route shall be spaced at approximately one-quarter to one-half mile intervals.
- Traffic and/or Road Conditions
Bus stops may be created to avoid having elementary and middle school students:
A. Cross a main road* without an adult crossing guard or traffic control device
B. Walk along the shoulder of a main road that does not have an adjacent sidewalk
C. In the case of elementary students; cross a multi-lane road that has a speed limit of 30 miles per hour or higher without a traffic control device and a crossing guard.
* A main road is defined for this purpose as a two-lane roadway that has a peak hour traffic volume during the time of the student's travel of 500 cars per hour or greater, or any multilane (more than two) roadway. Main roads shall include:
East/West
Walnut Lake Road
Wattles
Big Beaver/Quarton
Maple (15 Mile)
Lincoln (Woodward to Southfield only)
Fourteen Mile
Thirteen Mile
North/South
Eton
Adams

Greenfield/Pierce (between 13 Mile and 14 Mile roads)
Southfield
Evergreen/Cranbrook

Middlebelt
- Routing Considerations
A. Walking distance to bus stops should not exceed one-half mile; effort should be made to limit the distance to one-quarter mile. Walking distances for kindergarten students at noon should be minimized.
B. The director of transportation shall establish routes and bus stop locations that will consider traffic and/or road conditions, economy and efficiency.
- Establishment of Ridership
The director of transportation shall develop bus routings and schedules based on ridership.
Each spring the elementary and middle school students advancing to middle school or high school will be surveyed regarding the appropriate bus transportation schedules for the next school year. The director of transportation, with the assistance of building principals, will complete this survey.
Otherwise, transported students will be provided the opportunity for bus transportation on a continuing basis. Students' bus numbers, stop locations and times will be mailed out to them approximately one week before school resumes each fall. Changes warranted by a student moving into a different attendance area, new student residents to be transported, the discontinuance of a stop, etc., will be arranged by the transportation department. Add-ons occurring during the summer months or later may be granted ridership on a space availability basis.
Open enrollment students and alternative home base students shall also request transportation services in this summer.
Principals may grant permission for infrequent alternative drop-off point transportation in unusual circumstances. The request needs to be made in writing by the parent or guardian.
